The different body types gave the gameplay a surprising amount of variety. A team of skinnies plays very different from a team of heavies. I like to play the USSR with a full team of heavies and pretend they're drug-enhanced supermen like Ivan Drago.
I have a strange relationship with this game. I'm really bad at it (as with all sports games from that era), but at the same time I always come back for more. There's a charm to it that only Nintendo was able to provide, which explains why I love playing this.
Well, to be honest, the only great volleyball game I ever played was Klonoa Beach Volleyball on PSX. Apparently this is not the best sport to make a videogame.
Oh maaaan, I forgot that Klonoa volleyball game was a thing. Never came out in the States. Glad to hear it was enjoyable, though! You're right, volleyball is a difficult sport to translate to video games.
The guy’s uniform on the box looks more like a Rangers jersey for some reason… Must have been pretty fun reenacting the miracle on ice by playing this back in the day. Fun game, but I’m more of a Blades of Steel fan though.
Refinement is a good word for it, compared to the earlier NES sports games. Nothing will usurp Baseball for me either, but Ice Hockey is clearly the superior game.

This was a fun game back in the day but my friends and I always preferred Blades of Steel. And that famicom cover is so good.
I definitely think Blades of Steel usurped Ice Hockey when it came out.
