Behold! I come bearing a Personal Update.
The Substack is growing slowly. I am grateful for the growth. If I’m honest, I also expected my subscriber numbers to be higher by now. Perhaps that’s what I get for only talking about old obscure NES games.
I know I could help numbers along by buying the Switch 2 and discussing it on here – in theory, anyway. I will of course share my thoughts on the Switch 2 once I get one, but that is for a later time.
Right now, the Substack must yield to The Book…
Last year, I wrote a book, tentative title: The Nintendo Entertainment System: 1985-1987. I finished all the writing and have been working on the layout in InDesign for the last 15 months now (off and on). I didn’t know InDesign before this, so I’ve had to learn as I go. It’s been interesting/ moderately enjoyable to learn a new skill, although I don’t think I want to make a book like this again, with me constructing the entire thing. I’m a writer at heart, all other occupations come after.
Finishing the book should be my top priority, but when I started Nintendo is Great in September 2024, I got sucked into the instant gratification of receiving likes and comments for every post I made. Thus, the book got put on the back burner and the Substack slowly consumed all my free time.
I want to live in a world where I have time to:
1) Finish the book
2) Work tirelessly on the Substack
3) Start new book
Such a world is possible, but I don’t know how probable it is between: work duties, life responsibilities, and unexpected “now this is happening”s.
So! I will do my best to post on the Substack at least once a week. If I don’t make this self-appointed timeframe, well, you know why. I’m finishing my book, con sarn it!
Once the book is complete and I have physical copies ready to ship out, all paid subscribers will receive one for free. I do not have a release date for the book yet, but just know that I want it out sooner than later. The only way to do that is buckle down and get the darn thing done.
No matter what happens, I’m super grateful for all of you. Your investment in my work, whether through reading, commenting or payment, means more than I can say.
Thanks for being here,
DC
For what it's worth? You're *the* NES guy on Substack to me, I don't see anyone else doing it better; writing these posts is a thankless job a lot of the time and I'm sure if we all covered US Politocs we'd have triple the growth but where's the fun in that?
You were the first like and comment I ever received on this platform, as long as you're still around I'll be rooting for you.
Whether you're writing here or for your book, as long as you're finding joy in the craft, that's what matters. It's awesome to hear that you have this bigger project in the works - you have a terrific voice on retro gaming and I'm always going to be keen to read more from you!
