I wish they called the movie Super Mario Bros. 2 and just made it a remixed version of the first one where it’s even harder for Mario to save the Mushroom Kingdom.

I legitimately laughed out loud at work when I read this comment, haha. Thank you for that!

Thank you! I'm glad I wasn't the only one fairly disappointed. STILL no new Mario game announcement even upon the 40th ANNIVERSARY of the character? I really don't understand it. It's not like the anniversary "snuck up on them". I guess it's possible they are working on something but development issues are delaying things. But even still, a 30 second teaser with just a title is enough for now. I'm excited for Yoshi and if I hadn't already played Galaxy 1 and 2 recently, I would even pick up that collection. But man, it just smacks of Nintendo not having a plan for their biggest character of all time.

Yeah, honestly, Nintendo has felt off ever since they started rolling out Switch 2. Pricing, communication, etc. Not sure what's going on, but as long as they're making tons of money, I doubt they'll change anything.

To play plumber's advocate, this year alone they have announced/released a new Mario Kart Game, new Mario Party DLC, New Donkey Kong (which is part of the Mario universe), new Mario Tennis, New Mario Wonder DLC, new Yoshi game (like you said part of the Mario universe). Enhanced re-releases of 2 of the most beloved games of the franchise.

To think a new 3D Mario game was going to be announced when Bananza just came out (made by the same studio) was a little hopelessly optimistic imo. I don't want to see them releasing 3D Mario games for the sake of just releasing them and have a potential Sonic scenario where most of the games are misses but hey, they do release them often.

All this to say...are we really lacking Mario content in 2025 and going into 2026?

I see what you're saying, but also, I'm unsure how any of those things celebrate 40 years of Super Mario Bros. specifically.

This isn't the celebration of Mario as a character. This is the celebration of the Super Mario Bros. game for the NES. At least that's how Nintendo themselves have framed it.

True, I think receiving an announcement for a brand new 3D Mario game would be a little premature.

Again, I return to the 35th SMB anniversary in 2020, when we received SMB 35, the limited time battle royale, and the SMB Game and Watch. Both novelties, perhaps, but a nice way of celebrating that iconic game.

I think Nintendo figured that the Galaxy Collection is their contribution, and fine, I can get on board with that. But let's not pretend the collection wouldn't have appeared anyway, thanks to the movie.

Neither the movie nor the game are being made because SMB is having its 40th anniversary, they're just shoehorned into the celebration. It just all feels a little cheap.

That said, I do appreciate your contrasting viewpoints!

The new Nintendo philosophy has been "respect the value". That's the logic behind Switch games never going on sale. However, when they charge $40 for games from 2 generations ago, no matter the extras or the fact it's remastered, I can't respect the value enough to justify me buying it.

Dylan Cornelius's avatar

100% agree. I love Mario Galaxy 2, but I can't justify spending $40 on it, unless it was completely remade a la Metroid Prime Remastered. That is not the case.

It feels so strange at the moment, I really like the Switch 2 and the games so far but there's just this... unpleasantness and bad faith around Nintendo at the moment, I think they really need to change things up and soon.

Dylan Cornelius's avatar

Couldn't agree more. They're in full-on hubris mode, never a good thing for any gaming company.

Lawrence 'Scanlines' Lichfield's avatar

The attitude I get from them at the moment is "No matter what we do, you'll eat it up anyway." But that won't be the case forever, the difference between being the SNES and being the N64 is only half a decade, ground moves quickly in this business.

Dylan Cornelius's avatar

Exactly. They don’t seem to understand that most of the world is on shaky financial ground. Also the reason the Switch 1 sold gangbusters is because it was sensibly priced. Those days appear to be over.

The Switch was always the ultimate second console. Nintendo doesn't put out the kind of hardware that can fill the role of a gaming PC or an Xbox but it was portable, cheap and had great games so it filled the perfect niche.

I feel, as they very often do, that Nintendo have lost sight of who their audience are: families, old Nintendo heads and indie gamers. When even people like you and me aren't happy, you know the average consumer has probably written them off already.

Dylan Cornelius's avatar

Very true. I have a feeling they'll have a solid Christmas season, but after that, hard to say.

Lawrence 'Scanlines' Lichfield's avatar

Me too. My gut says the Switch 2 will end up a bit like the 3DS did: consistently solid, well-liked and delivering impressive games for the hardware but ultimately less successful than its predecessor and with a limited pop-culture impact.

I initially wasn't sure what you meant by this. What's an appropriate way to celebrate?

But I realize I really enjoyed the SMB Battle Royale. By far my favorite of the Switch battle royale games, and a great celebration of Mario. Probably accounts for a majority of my online play on Switch. Hard to believe that was 5 years ago!

Nintendo literally could have just done that with a different classic Mario game -- I'll even accept SMB 2, which I'm not that big a fan of normally -- and it would have been amazing and might have been enough to make me re-subscribe to NSO, which I've allowed to lapse.

The battle royale games -- free with NSO! -- really come across as a nice bonus to the fans, for a company that is increasingly reluctant to offer its fans nice bonuses at anything less than premium pricing.

Speaking of which, I've never properly played through Mario Galaxy 1-2, so the price here is rather annoying. I still have my Wii, though it hasn't been set up for years and I would consider it a headache to do so, one that would also annoy my wife. She would probably want me to put away the IR bar every time I'm done playing.

In the end I'm a lot more interested in DK Bananza, even if I don't know when I'll pick up a Switch 2. At the same price point as the SMG games, it's no contest, really.

Dylan Cornelius's avatar

Like you, I put a ton of hours into SMB 35, it was so much fun. Even a small gesture like that would have been welcome here.

I really hope sales for Galaxy 1 and 2 on Switch are underwhelming for Nintendo. This should be priced at $40 or $50 max. Shame, both games are really excellent.

Hopefully you can find the collection on eBay for a reduced price later down the line.

You nailed it as far as I am concerned. I mean nintendo have made some seriously iconic games over the last 40 years but this celebration was just a squeeze more out of the back catalogue and to be honest, nothing to look forward to...

My son wants a switch 2 to play DKB, but where on the horizon is the next zelda, mario, pikmin and so on?

The mighty N launched a new console with a very limited reason to upgrade..

Dylan Cornelius's avatar

I imagine a new 3D Mario will be in 2026, but crazy that they don't have anything to show at the moment? Not even a teaser, like John said?

Unless you're a Nintendo die-hard who likes Kirby, Metroid, and Zelda spin-offs, there's no reason to upgrade just yet. DK Bananza is fantastic, but I don't think it's "brand new system" fantastic.
